UFC 294 has been one of the most-anticipated events of 2023 since its announcement, with fan-favourite former UFC Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira looking to regain his title in a rematch against Makhachev. Over the past week, UFC 294 has undergone tremendous change in both the main and co-main events, arguably making the event even more anticipated, with two legends stepping into the event on short notice.

Islam Makhachev Leaves No Doubts Against Alexander Volkanovski: UFC 294 Review

Following a training injury to Oliveira, the UFC 294 main event now features another Championship rematch, instead between Makhachev and Volkanovski. Despite being the UFC Featherweight Champion and the number one pound-for-pound fighter on the planet, Volkanovski steps in on less than two week’s notice for a 5-round Championship bout halfway across the world.

Makhachev and Volkanovski first fought earlier this year at UFC 284, where the two men engaged in one of the highest-level fights of all time. After five rounds of back-and-forth action, Makhachev was ruled the winner in a decision that could have gone either way. Makhachev has not fought since that win, while Volkanovski returned to Featherweight and defended his title in dominant fashion against Yair Rodriguez.

The UFC 294 co-main event features a Middleweight bout between undefeated prodigy Khamzat Chimaev and short-notice opponent, former UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman. Like Volkanovski, Usman remarkably accepted the fight on less than two weeks’ notice against a man who has looked unbeatable. Chimaev was initially scheduled to face Paulo Costa, who was forced out with an elbow injury sustained in training.
