Rafael Fiziev Leg Injury Prematurely Ends Main Event: UFC Vegas 79 Results

UFC Vegas 79 takes place this weekend from the UFC APEX, headlined by a matchup between Lightweight contenders Rafael Fiziev and Mateusz Gamrot. Find all the results from UFC Vegas 79 below.

In the UFC Vegas 79 main event, top-10 Lightweights Rafael Fiziev and Mateusz Gamrot will look to move one step closer to a shot at the UFC Lightweight Championship. Both men are newer faces in the division who have surged into title contention but fallen short against the top-tier fighters in the division, with losses to Justin Gaethje and Beneil Dariush, respectively.

Fiziev, a Muay Thai specialist, rapidly rose through the UFC’s Lightweight division despite limited prior MMA experience. Putting together a six-fight win streak, capped off with a fifth-round stoppage of former UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos, Fiziev earned a potential title eliminator bout with Gaethje earlier this year but suffered a majority decision loss in that fight.

Gamrot is one of the best wrestlers in the UFC, with vast experience before joining the organisation, having won both the KSW Featherweight and Lightweight Championships. After suffering a decision loss to Dariush last October, Gamrot bounced back with a contentious split decision victory over Jalin Turner at UFC 285. The UFC Vegas 79 main event is set for an intriguing striker versus grappler matchup between Fiziev and Gamrot.

The UFC Vegas 79 co-main event features another high-level fight, with Bryce Mitchell taking on Dan Ige in a ranked Featherweight matchup. After appearing on The Ultimate Fighter 27, Mitchell established himself as a future contender but suffered a tough submission loss to Ilia Topuria in his last bout. He will look to bounce back against Ige, who has looked excellent in his past two fights, securing wins over Damon Jackson and Nate Landwehr.
