Amanda Nunes Retires As The GOAT: UFC 289 Review

UFC 289 took place this past weekend in Vancouver, Canada, with Amanda Nunes defending her Championship in dominant fashion in the main event. Read our review of UFC 289 below.

In a fight card that was largely being under hyped and under appreciated outside of the co-main event, the fights and the crowd all delivered. So much so that during Canadian star Mike Malott’s walkout, the barricade collapsed from the pressure of the fans, nearly landing right on top of him.

The UFC’s return to Canada was highly successful, with every Canadian fighter on the card, including Malott, securing impressive victories in front of their home crowd. While we saw an unfortunate ending to the featured prelim bout between Nassourdine Imavov and Chris Curtis, every other fight delivered.

The Lioness Roars One Last Time

In the UFC 289 main event, Amanda Nunes secured another dominant defence of her UFC Bantamweight Championship. While there seemed to be some movement towards Aldana posing a serious threat due to her explosive power, she simply did not turn up on the night.

Nunes was as perfect as ever, striking from the outside, sitting down on her power punches and landing takedowns when she wanted. If anything, it seemed like she may have even improved further from the bouts with Julianna Peña. After the decision was read out, Nunes made the announcement that we all thought might be coming in the near future.

After one of the greatest careers of all time, Nunes finally announced her retirement from the sport. Making her pro debut in 2008 and UFC debut in 2013, Nunes has been atop the sport for a long time. Following a loss to Cat Zingano in her third UFC bout in 2014, Nunes went on her Championship run, which included winning both the UFC Women’s Bantamweight and Featherweight Championships and defeating every other former Champion in those division’s histories.

She is undoubtedly the greatest female fighter of all time, and her resume is worthy of being put alongside the best male fighters of all time. Nunes should get her spot in the UFC Hall of Fame next year during International Fight Week and will hopefully receive the celebration she deserves.

With one daughter and another child on the way, Nunes will have her hands full outside of the fight game, parenting and enjoying the fruits of her long career. During the post-fight press conference, she mentioned that she loves the sport and wants to stick around, likely in a coaching spot at her gym. Let’s hope we still get to see her around the sport for years to come.

Do Bronx Does What Do Bronx Does Best

In the UFC 289 co-main event, former UFC Lightweight Champion Charles ‘do Bronx’ Oliveira returned to the win column in stunning fashion against streaking contender Beneil Dariush. In a fight that many people were backing Dariush due to the stylistic matchup, Oliveira proved again why he is amongst the best and most entertaining fighters on the planet.

After some back-and-forth exchanges to open the bout, Oliveira seemed to jump guard and force Dariush to the ground. Both men exchanged blows while on the ground, with Dariush defending well against the submission attacks of Oliveira. However, towards the back half of Round 1, Oliveira finally decided to get back to his feet.

From there. Oliveira began to pressure Dariush, utilising the skills that led to his fairytale Championship run. With his long-range power shots and knees on the inside, Oliveira rushed Dariush, landing some good shots which put him down. Oliveira then finished the fight with some heavy ground and pound. Once again, Oliveira managed to have a back-and-forth war inside one round.

Adding to his records for the most finishes and post-fight bonuses in UFC history and still only 33 years of age, Oliveira adds to his illustrious resume and maintains his spot amongst the best in the world. He should face UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev in a rematch later this year in Abu Dhabi.
